EGR Valve. I have a 2007 Ford Transit, having done only 80,000 miles. The Engine Management Light is permanently on. The main dealer has reset it and tells me the EGR valve wants replacing again. It remained off for approx 2 weeks and then lit up again. This is the 5th time it has needed replacing.

Hi there thanksOk the most common cause of this concern on the custom is a faulty DPF sensor (Diesel Particulate Filter) The DPF sensor should read around 0.5 volts with ignition on What we see is it reads too high around 1.4 volts and makes the pcm (Powertrain Control Module) think the DPF is completely blocked As it can only assume this from the voltage it sees from the dpf sensorThe dpf
Spray some decarb into the maf sensor hole whilst the engine is running. Turn the engine off and let it soak the valves for 2 hours and then run the car to blow out the smoke containing the decarb cleaner. The run the car and put some diesel injector cleaner in the fuel. Then do an oil change.

The EGR valve (exhaust gas recirculation valve) does nothing more than introduce exhaust gases into the combustion process under certain conditions which has the effect of cooling the combustion process and contributing to less harmfull emissions. Most engines have them.
