You absolutely need to play at least half-life 2 episode 1 and 2 before playing alyx. I'd say if you have a general knowledge of half life, you'll probably be fine. I would recommend plating or watching the end of half life 2 episode 2 to fully understand the after credits scene.
VR pirates have their own separate community with a separate way of doing things. Most VR games oddly have no DRM, very weak DRM, or DRM that is extremely easily worked around. There are applications that remove DRM (such as steamless) and others that emulates steam (such as ALI 213), most VR games will require one or both of those. Since VR is A community effort to get the VR exclusive Half-Life Alyx fully playable in 2D and without the need for a VR headset is making strides. The latest release of the mod by the NoVR team now allows you to play the entire campaign from beginning to end in 2D. While this is great for accessibility

I'd say minimum for running ok vr is gtx 960. But alyx requires gtx 1060, don't skimp out on video card, alyx just from screen shots, looks like it needs a good video card. Even if it did run (it might, it does support Dx12, GL4.6 and Vulkan 1.1.126, IDK what source2 requires) it will NOT be a good experience.
